The NeverEnding Story set to receive big screen reboot

March 21, 2024 by Matt Rodgers

The NeverEnding Story appears to be just that, with news emerging that the fantasy classic is set to receive a a big screen reboot.

According to Deadline, Michael Ende’s cherished novel will be adapted into a series of live-action films which are being developed and produced by Michael Ende Productions and Oscar-winning See-Saw Films.

Published in 1979, The NeverEnding Story was a huge hit in Ende’s native country of Germany, where it spent a neverending amount of time on the best-seller list, and was subsequently translated into 45 languages, selling millions of copies around the world.

The fantasy fable is perhaps most famous for the 1984 big-screen iteration that was written and directed by Wolfgang Peterson and spawned the classic “NeverEnding storyyyyyyyyyyy, ahhhhhhhhhhhh” song, and a lifetimes worth of nightmares thanks to a scene featuring a horse named Artax and a swamp.

The NeverEnding Story tells the magical tale of Bastian, who ducks into a bookstore to avoid bullies on his way home from school and discovers the titular novel, “The Neverending Story.” When Bastian begins reading it in the school attic the novel comes to life, telling the tale of a world called Fantasia, a fantasy land threatened by “The Nothing,” a darkness that destroys everything it touches, and only the help of a human child can save The kingdom.
