The Monsterverse will have to find a new captain of the ship as Adam Wingard is not returning for the recently-announced next chapter.
After helming Godzilla vs. Kong and its 2024 sequel, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Wingard will not be returning for another film, according to THR. The outlet reports that the “parting of ways is described as amicable” and that the door is open to a possible return.
We recently learned that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings screenwriter Dave Callaham will pen the new script. Callaham wrote the early drafts and received a story by credit for 2014’s Godzilla. At the time of writing, there’s no new director attached to the project.
The latest film has grossed close to $565 million worldwide. This marks the biggest haul since 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, which peaked at $568 million. For comparison, 2021’s Godzilla vs Kong only made $470.1 million. Even more impressively, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire could be the most profitable in the Monsterverse, with the film only costing $135 million to produce.
