John Waters has the Liarmouth script and Aubrey Plaza on board, so why can’t he fund his comeback?

May 28, 2024 by EJ Moreno

If there’s a filmmaker who will tell it like it is, that would be John Waters. From the state of cinema to his takes on society, you can always count on the Pink Flamingos director to drop a nugget of truth. His latest comment comes in the form of the sad honesty that he can’t fund his latest film.

With a script turned in and an actress attached, Waters is opening up to IndieWire about the state of Liarmouth and how he hasn’t put together the budget for his long-awaited directorial comeback.

He tells the publication, “I wrote the script, they liked it, Aubrey [Plaza] likes the script, wants to be in it, I want her to be in it, and every person said, ‘No, we don’t have a penny of the budget.’ That is where it is today. Hopefully, that will change. But the answer as of today? That’s it.”

Liarmouth follows Marsha Sprinkle, described as “a suitcase thief, scammer, and master of disguise. Dogs and children hate her. Her own family wants her dead. She’s smart, she’s desperate, she’s disturbed, and she’s on the run with a big chip on her shoulder. They call her Liarmouth―until one insane man makes her tell the truth.”

We spoke to the legendary filmmaker about the re-release of his film Cry-Baby, and he seems as pointed as ever. Can someone introduce him to crowdfunding to get the stellar combination of Waters and Aubrey Plaza?

Liarmouth would mark John Waters’ first film in twenty years.
