Luca Guadagnino is coming off his meme-able and massive pop culture success, Challengers, and he’s already preparing his next scandalous film.
Starring Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey, Queer is already gearing up to be one of Guadagnino’s must-see projects. Based on William S. Burroughs’ controversial novel, it was a shocking project during its release in 1985, and the filmmakers are promising to keep up that scandal.
Speaking with Cinecitta, Guadagnino dove into the film and promised another wild ride, and he won’t be holding back on the steamy moments.
“Queer will be my most personal film. It’s an homage to Powell and Pressburger. I’ve seen The Red Shoes at least 50 times, and I think they’d appreciate the sex scenes of Queer, which are numerous and quite scandalous,” says the filmmaker.
For those who don’t know, Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger were a British filmmaking duo known as pioneers of Technicolor cinematography. Their most memorable films include The Red Shoes, Black Narcissus, A Matter of Life and Death, and A Canterbury Tale.
Daniel Craig stars as Lee, a self-conscious, insecure man living in 1940s Mexico City. He survives on GI Bill benefits and part-time jobs among expat American college students. He becomes infatuated with Allerton (Drew Starkey), a recently discharged young U.S. Navy serviceman and drug user from Florida.
Queer is reportedly set for release this Fall.
