Red Sonja set photo offers new look at Matilda Lutz in full armor

September 16, 2024 by Gary Collinson

It’s been a good while since we’ve heard anything regarding Millennium Media’s long-gestating Red Sonja reboot, with a first-look image of Matilda Lutz (Revenge) as the comic book heroine released some two years back to mark the start of production and fans attending at last year’s San Diego Comic-Con treated to a teaser trailer ahead of a planned release in the first half of 2024.

Obviously that’s come and gone now, but as we await official word on release plans the official Red Sonja Instagram account has moved to remind us of the film’s existence with a new photo showing Lutz on set alongside director  M.J. Bassett (Solomon Kane) and sporting the She-Devil with a Sword’s signature armor (albeit one that offers a little more protection than her comic counterpart)…

Red Sonja is based upon the comic book character originally created for Marvel Comics by Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith, and partially inspired by Conan creator Robert E. Howard’s Red Sonya of Rogatino. The new film will mark her second big screen outing following 1985’s Red Sonja, which was directed by Richard Fleischer and starred Brigitte Nielsen in the title role.

Along with Matilda Lutz, the new film stars Wallis Day (Batwoman) as Annisia, Robert Sheehan (The Umbrella Academy) as Draygan, Michael Bisping (xXx: Return of Xander Cage) as Hawk, Martyn Ford (F9: The Fast Saga) as General Karlak, Eliza Matengu (Thor: Love and Thunder) as Amarak, Manal El Feitury (Code Red) as Ayala, and Katrina Durden (Shadow and Bone) as Saevus, along with Rhona Mitra (The Last Ship) in an undisclosed role.
