Joker: Folie à Deux opens to soft numbers at the box office

October 5, 2024 by Matt Rodgers

It appears that Joker and Harley Quinn might singing the blues when the weekend box-office numbers are announced, because Joker: Folie à Deux looks to be landing below expectations, and with some of the worst audience feedback scores of the year.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, the Todd Phillips directed sequel earned $7 million in previews, which would put it somewhere in the $50-60 million bracket for the weekend. To call those numbers low would warrant a Joker-style cackle, but those figures are almost 50% down on the original film’s domestic opening, and whereas 2019’s Joker cost $55 million to produce, this song-and-dance sequel has a rumoured production budget of $200 million.

To compound matters, audiences aren’t exactly enamoured with Gotham’s Clown Prince of Crime, awarding the film a Cineamscore rating of D, and a PostTrak score of one star out of five. Obviously those marks could improve over the weekend, but Folie à Deux currently sits at 33% on Rotten Tomatoes, and we called it “a movie certainly not made for fans but also seems to have been made for no one” in our ★★ review.

Ultimately it’s about whether you enjoyed it or not, so let us know what you thought of Joker: Folie à Deux by heading to our social channels @FlickeringMyth…

“Joker: Folie Ą Deux” finds Arthur Fleck institutionalized at Arkham, awaiting trial for his crimes as Joker. While struggling with his dual identity, Arthur not only stumbles upon true love but also finds the music that’s always been inside him.

The new film stars Joaquin Phoenix once again in his Oscar-winning dual role as Arthur Fleck/Joker opposite Oscar-winner Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born). The film also stars Oscar nominees Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin) and Catherine Keener (Get Out, Capote), alongside Zazie Beetz, reprising her role from Joker.
