As Sonic the Hedgehog becomes a billion dollar movie franchise, Jim Carrey is open to another outing

January 6, 2025 by EJ Moreno

Sonic The Hedgehog has been a staple of pop culture since the 90s, and now, he’s officially a billion-dollar franchise movie as the film series has become a box office smash hit.

With the third film in the franchise proving to be the nerd event of the winter season, the entire film series has joined the billion-dollar club. Coming in second this weekend at the box office, Sonic The Hedgehog 3 brought in $21.2 million domestically and $51.2 million overseas. That brings the total haul for this video game adaptation to $336.3 million so far.

As the weekend ended, Paramount announced that the films crossed the $1 billion mark: 2020’s Sonic The Hedgehog saw $320 million in its run before the pandemic hit, and then the beloved second installment snagged $405 million. You can see that the studio is far from done with these movies, and so is one of the key players behind it, Jim Carrey.

Speaking to the Japanese YouTube channel Cinema Today, Carrey reveals that his time isn’t done; the fans, Carrey, and the character of Dr. Robotnik are connected.

Carrey tells the channel, “I’m definitely open. I’m open to the idea, and generally, they come to me with the next idea, and if I go, ‘That sounds fun,’ then I’ll do it. I don’t feel locked to anything in life unless it’s something that interests me.”

“I certainly love this crew, I love this gang that makes these movies, and I love the fans,” he added. “There’s a lot of really great energy around it, great responses, and the fans jump in and say, ‘How about if you do this?’ They’ve been super helpful. I think we’re all making this movie together.”

The fourth Sonic film is reportedly aiming for a Spring 2027 release.

Sonic the Hedgehog returns to the big screen this holiday season in his most thrilling adventure yet. Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails reunite against a powerful new adversary, Shadow, a mysterious villain with powers unlike anything they have faced before. With their abilities outmatched in every way, Team Sonic must seek out an unlikely alliance in hopes of stopping Shadow and protecting the planet.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 sees the return of Ben Schwartz, Jim Carrey, James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Idris Elba, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, Natasha Rothwell, Shemar Moore, Adam Pally, Lee Majdoub, alongside franchise newcomers newcomers Alyla Browne, Krysten Ritter, and Keanu Reeves as the voice of Shadow the Hedgehog.
