Rey Skywalker movie Star Wars: New Jedi Order sets new writer

January 25, 2025 by Ricky Church

The galaxy far, far away has gained a new writer for New Jedi Order, the upcoming film Star Wars film which will follow Daisey Ridley’s Rey years after the Sequel Trilogy.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lucasfilm has hired screenwriter George Nolfi to pen the script. This comes after Lucasfilm has seen several writers come and go on the project, including Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson and then Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight. Nolfi is known for writing The Bourne Ultimatum, The Adjustment Bureau and The Banker, both of which he directed, and Elevation.

New Jedi Order is said to take place 15 years after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the final film of the Sequel Trilogy, as Rey trains a new generation of Jedi to protect the galaxy.

The film will be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, a documentary filmmaker who will make her feature film debut with New Jedi Order. She explained last year why she chose to focus on Rey Skywalker, who adopted the last name of her last master in the closing moments of the previous film, saying “At the heart of it, for me, is Rey Skywalker, Daisy Ridley and her story and taking her on an adventure to a Jedi Academy. And sort of creating a world that is a natural dovetail to the story we’ve seen her go through the last three episodes.”

New Jedi Order is not the only Star Wars film Lucasfilm has been developing. Up next is The Mandalorian & Grogu, a feature film continuation of The Mandalorian as Din Djarin and his foundling apprentice Grogu travel the galaxy for a May 22nd, 2026 release, while Wolverine & Deadpool director Shawn Levy is working on a Star Wars project and is in talks with Barbie star Ryan Gosling to lead the film. Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins is also reportedly back to work on Rogue Squadron after it was shelved a few years ago.
