Sarah Michelle Gellar talks Buffy sequel series, says they “are on the path” to making it right

February 7, 2025 by Ricky Church

This week brought the surprising and exciting news that a Buffy the Vampire Slayer sequel series is in development and nearing a greenlight on Hulu with Sarah Michelle Gellar set to reprise her iconic role if it is picked up. Gellar has now shared her thoughts on the news, assuring fans “we will only make this show if we know we can do it right. And I will tell you that we are on the path there.”

Alongside her for the potential series are original Buffy executive producer Gail German, Nomadland director Chloé Zhao and Poker Face showrunners and writers Nora and Lilla Zuckerman. Gellar shared on Instagram her excitement to return to Buffy and how the idea came about, revealing it was a meeting with Berman and Zhao a few years ago which began it all.

“While I didn’t agree to anything at that meeting, I did shock myself by agreeing to continue the conversation. These conversations did, in fact, continue over the next few years and eventually we added the incredible Nora and Lilla Zuckerman to our little tribe until ultimately, one day, we landed on an idea,” Gellar said in her lengthy post.

She continued by assuring fans they were all keen on making the sequel only if they could get it right as Gellar did not want to do a revival unless it would capture the spirit of the original series and the fans’ love for it. “I have always listened to the fans and heard your desire to revisit “Buffy” and her world, but it was not something I could do unless I was sure we would get it right. This has been a long process, and it’s not over yet. I promise you, we will only make this show if we know we can do it right. And I will tell you that we are on the path there.”

The Zuckerman sisters will showrun, write and executive produce the series while Zhao will direct its pilot and executive produce with Gellar and Berman. The series will not focus on Buffy Summers though as it will instead follow the next generational Slayer and Gellar will have a recurring role as Buffy.

As we wait for further news on the pilot greenlight, we’ll have to see if other original Buffy stars such as Alyson Hannigan, who played Buffy’s best friend and witch Willow, or Anthony Head as Giles, Buffy’s mentor and Watcher, will return as well.

What do you think of Gellar’s comments on the Buffy sequel? Do you want to see it if they get it right for its fans or think it should stay concluded with its final season? Let us know on our social channels at @FlickeringMyth…
