New Doctor Who audio adventures for River Song, Tegan and Ace arrive from Big Finish

March 15, 2025 by Andrew Newton

Big Finish Productions has released a brand-new box set of full cast audio dramas from the world of Doctor Who continuing the adventures of Professor River Song.  These new adventures sees River Song joined by two of the Doctor’s earlier companions – Ace and Tegan – as they investigate hauntings, aliens and mad scientists.

The Death and Life of River Song: Ace and Tegan stars Alex Kingston as the assassin-turned-archaeologist River Song, Sophie Aldred as Ace and Janet Fielding as Tegan.  The trio will face the following adventures…

Castaways by James Moran has Ace and Tegan looking into supposed hauntings in Victorian London’s new underground railway system. However, their memories of how they got there and why are gone, but they are about to encounter River Song who may, or may not give them the full story.

Driftwood by Roland Moore takes listeners back to the time of Ace’s adventures in the TARDIS. In this new tale, Ace is aboard a stricken ship, cut off from the Doctor and with only 60 minutes to live. Something has infiltrated the vessel through the wires, and it is something that can control the metal structure. As time runs short, a mysterious woman’s arrival may be Ace’s only hope.

In Dead Rising by Roland Moore, the Doctor and Turlough are on ice while Tegan faces interrogation from the Pilot of Vrexel colony as she is suspected of being connected with the deaths of the colonists. However, when River Song arrives and the dead start to rise, Tegan’s problems begin to get a lot worse.

Finally, in The End is the Beginning is the End by James Moran, River, Ace and Tegan must stop Gregor Ganley from constantly changing their past.  This mad scientist is always one step ahead and Tegan and Ace have the hard job of persuading River that assassination isn’t always the best option.

From L to R – Beth Chalmers, Simon Kane, Anna Crichlow, Janet Fielding, Sophie Aldred, David Richardson.

Alex Kingston said: “Having never met Janet and Sophie before, it’s been really, really fun to meet up with companions from the past. This is what’s so great about working on the audio stories, because these characters can carry on living and having adventures with their Doctors or with River – there are wonderful mashups to be explored. When else would I get to meet these two fabulous women?”

The Death and Life of River Song: Ace and Tegan is available to purchase now from the Big Finish website as a download for £22.99 or as a download and limited edition collector’s CD box set for £29.99. Bundles are also available with The Death and Life of River Song: Last Words, which was released in August and a third volume due out later this year.
