Meryl Streep set to play Aslan in Greta Gerwig’s The Chronicles of Narnia movie

April 3, 2025 by Matt Rodgers

Greta Gerwig’s Netflix Narnia movie appears to have cast one of its most iconic characters with the news that Meryl Streep is set to voice Aslan the Great Lion.

Per Nexus Point News (and confirmed by sources at Deadline) the Academy Award winner has been offered the role of the talking lion, who will be female in Gerwig’s adaptation.

The report also revealed which of the seven C.S. Lewis. Narnia books the Barbie director would be adapting first. The sixth book in the series, The Magician’s Nephew, which depicts events before those that take place in The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe, will be the starting point for this new adaptation.

The Magician’s Nephew was first published in 1955 and features the creation of Narnia by Aslan the Lion. The story focuses on two children, Digory Kirke and Polly Plummer, who stumble into this world thanks to their Uncle’s magic, where they inadvertently awaken the Witch Queen, Jadis.

Previous reports have linked Charli XCX to the role of Jadis, while Daniel Craig has been rumoured to play the children’s Uncle.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew is set for an exclusive two-week Imax global run for Thanksgiving 2026 before streaming on Netflix.
