The Worlds of Doctor Who – Planet Krynoid: Nightfall arrives from Big Finish

April 9, 2025 by Andrew Newton

A brand-new three hour, full-cast audio drama arrives today from Big Finish Productions that brings disaster to a planet and big problems for Paul McGann’s Eighth Doctor.  Starring Reece Shearsmith as Governor Robert Hodan, The Worlds of Doctor Who – Planet Krynoid: Nightfall features the carnivorous plants called the Krynoid that first appeared in the 1976 Doctor Who TV story The Seeds of Doom.  There’s also a chilling new trailer below to give you the heebie-jeebies…

In Planet Krynoid: Nightfall, the listener is taken to the world of Sunlight, an artificial paradise on a frozen world that provides rest and relaxation for the wealthy and an escape from unemployment and poverty for the poor.  Unfortunately for Governor Robert Hodan, this paradise may just be coming to an end when an engineer discovers a pair of strange looking pods attached in a satellite.

The Doctor knows only too well, where the Krynoid gets established, the vegetation soon starts to feast on the animals, and the end of Sunlight as a verdant paradise may be arriving fast.

The three instalments of this box set are – Sunlight by Jonathan Morris, Sunset by Jonathan S Powell and Darkness by Chris Chapman.

From L to R: Ian Conningham, Jonathan S Powell, Sarah Whitehouse, Lucy Heath, Em Prendergast, Nye Occomore, Melody Chikakane Brown, Ben Crowe.

Besides Reece Shearsmith and Paul McGann (as a guest star), this box set stars Sarah Whitehouse, Ian Conningham, Nye Occomore, Joseph Ayre, Lucy Heath, Rakie Ayola, Melody Chikakane Brown, Chloë Sommer, Em Prendergast and Ben Crowe.

Lead actor Reece Shearsmith said: “It’s a thrill to be part of Doctor Who, it’s an institution and it feels like you’ve made it as an actor if you’re asked to be in this world. Hodan is a particular sort of character that Doctor Who is peppered with a lot of – cowards who have a noble intention but trample on people along the way. I’ve done one before actually, in Mark Gatiss’s TV episode Sleep No More. It’s a nice thing to play, because it’s a very conflicted part.

Paul McGann added: “The best monsters work on a really visceral, almost childlike level. The Krynoids are like that. Who wants to be eaten by anything, never mind a huge plant?”

The Worlds of Doctor Who – Planet Krynoid: Nightfall is available to purchase now for £19.99 for the download and £24.99 for the limited collector’s edition box set.
