Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman go to war in The Roses trailer

April 16, 2025 by Amie Cranswick

Searchlight Pictures has debuted the first trailer for The Roses, the upcoming comedy drama from director Jay Roach.

A reimagining of 1989’s The War of the Roses and Warren Adler’s 1981 novel, the film stars Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch as couple with a seemingly picture perfect life, until a tinderbox of resentment is ignited when one of their careers nosedives and the others ambitions take off.

Life seems easy for picture-perfect couple Ivy (Olivia Colman) and Theo (Benedict Cumberbatch): successful careers, a loving marriage, great kids. But beneath the façade of their supposed ideal life, a storm is brewing – as Theo’s career nosedives while Ivy’s own ambitions take off, a tinderbox of fierce competition and hidden resentment ignites. The Roses is a reimagining of the 1989 classic film The War of the Roses, based on the novel by Warren Adler.

Joining Colman and Cumberbatch in the cast are Andy Samberg, Allison Janney, Belinda Bromilow, Sunita Mani, Ncuti Gatwa, Jamie Demetriou, Zoë Chao, and Kate McKinnon.

The Roses is set for release on September 1st.
