Russell Crowe to play Ramirez in Highlander remake

June 21, 2025 by Ricky Church

After several years of being in development with Henry Cavill tapped as the lead star, Chad Stahelski’s upcoming Highlander remake has now added a new cast member with Russell Crowe (Gladiator) joining the film.

Crowe will star as Ramirez, an immortal warrior who trains newfound immortal Connor MacLeod to fight in an ancient war that is secretly waged between the immortals. The role was played by Sean Connery in the 1986 original film.

The remake features Cavill as MacLeod and production will take place in London beginning in September. With Crowe’s casting and cameras set to roll in just a few months, we will likely hear plenty more casting news for the anticipated film over the summer.

Highlander followed Connor MacLeod, a Scottish Highlander born in the 1500s, who discovers he’s immortal. Trained by Ramirez, another immortal, he fights others until, as the series’ tagline goes, there can be only one. The original became a cult classic and spawned a franchise that includes several sequels and a TV series.
