Eric Roberts’ The Master turns teacher in new Doctor Who audio drama

July 11, 2025 by Andrew Newton

We’ve probably all met a teacher who disliked children in our time, but in Dark Gallifrey: Master! – Part One, the brand-new full-cast audio drama released today by Big Finish, none would be quite as nasty as the Master.  In this new trilogy in the Dark Gallifrey saga, the Master disguises himself as a teacher to a group of young Gallifreyans. What could possibly go wrong?

In this chilling story, written by Lizzie Hopley, the evil Time Lord takes a group of students on a trip but when their ship crashes, the young Gallifreyans find themselves trapped on a barren, twisted version of their home planet. It goes without saying that the Master has some devious plans for the young students.

Years later, Gamara, one of the survivors of this ill-fated day trip sets out to uncover the truth about what happened to her and her fellow students during that encounter with one of the most evil minds in the universe.

Jason Haigh-Ellery and Eric Roberts

In this new adventure, Eric Roberts stars as the worst teacher ever, the Master, with Claire Huckle as Gamara. Also starring – Chris Odulele, Nathan Griffiths, Francesca Gilbert, Nadia Violet Johnson, Millie Hikasa and Lizzie Hopley.

Eric Roberts said: “I love it because I love the Master. He is such a master! He’s so in charge and he’s so not nice. It’s always fun playing bad guys because you always get the best dialogue.”

Dark Gallifrey: Master! – Part One is available now from the Big Finish website for £8.99 for the download or £10.99 for the limited collector’s edition CD and download. Bundles are also available for all three instalments in this trilogy at £25 for the download and £31 for the downloads collector’s edition CD.
