Big Finish delivers a new Doctor Who adventure for the Third Doctor with The Mirror Matter audio novel

July 15, 2025 by Andrew Newton

There’s a brand new Doctor Who adventure in store for the Third Doctor as Big Finish releases the audio novel The Mirror Matter. Written by the acclaimed Doctor Who novelist Kate Orman and read by Jon Culshaw, this new story brings a particularly unusual and deadly alien to Earth and the Doctor, Liz Shaw and the Brigadier need to defend the planet.

In The Mirror Matter, alien “spores” – blobs of deadly mirror matter from the dawn of time, have been discovered and the Doctor, Liz and the Brigadier are sent to investigate. Understanding the seriousness of the situation, Liz calls for more scientists to help in the investigation but one is secretly working for  the BNKR, an organisation preparing to take over the world.

While the BNKR release a killer spore, the Doctor and Liz race to stop another in a countdown to destruction.  It’s up to the Doctor and his friends to prevent the entire Earth being converted into mirror matter.

The Mirror Matter, like the Season 7 TV serials starring Jon Pertwee, is divided into seven episodes of 50 minutes each, providing almost six hours of pure adventure and excitement.

Reader Jon Culshaw said “This story is full of that ominous mystery and rising menace that those Season Seven Doctor Who stories had. The threats don’t just take place on distant, alien worlds, they happen in the pub, and in a lady’s kitchen, or down a high street – it makes it feel very real, and reminds me of when the Autons came to life in Spearhead from Space.”

Doctor Who – The Audio Novels: The Mirror Matter is available from Big Finish now.
