Willem Dafoe joins Robert Eggers’ Werwulf

July 22, 2025 by EJ Moreno

Willem Dafoe has joined the newest Robert Eggers movie. To quote an internet phrase: “Fork found in the kitchen.”

Dafoe and Eggers will team up for Werwulf, a new werewolf film from the Nosferatu filmmaker. This will mark the fourth collaboration between the pair, with a fifth in the works, as Dafoe will also star in Eggers’ adaptation of A Christmas Carol.

Eggers will direct and co-write the script for Wewulf with his The Northman co-writer Sjón. Focus will produce and finance; Eggers and Sjón will produce alongside Focus.

The iconic actor will join Aaron-Taylor Johnson, who was previously cast in the project. Their Nosferatu co-star Lily Rose-Depp is also in talks to join the cast.

Details on the plot are being kept under wraps, but as the title suggests, we’ll see Eggers tackle the mythical monster. Reports note that the film will adhere to the period piece aesthetic found in all of Eggers’ films, which include The Witch, The Lighthouse, The Northman, and Nosferatu.

Next up for Dafoe will be The Man In The Basement and The Birthday Party. Werwulf meanwhile is set for a Christmas Day 2026 release in North America.
