Johnny Depp’s The Walking Dead cameo revealed

March 8, 2016 by Justin Cook

Warning. This post contains spoilers for episode 12 of season 6 of The Walking Dead. Continue on at your own peril…

If you watched last Sunday’s episode of The Walking Dead, entitled “Not Tomorrow Yet,” you’d know that Rick and his group devised a plan to ambush and kill Negan’s Saviors, in exchange for half of the Hilltop’s supplies. Of course, in order for the plan to work, the group needed the head of the Hilltop leader, Gregory, who is alive, well and an ally of Alexandrians, so Rick improvised a bit and cut the heads off of three walkers who bear a resemblance to the man. While the shot of these three heads laid out on the ground is quick, if you look close enough, you may notice that one of the heads looks very familiar. In a interview with Entertainment Weekly, which was posted right after “Not Tomorrow Yet” aired, the director of the episode, Greg Nicotero, confirmed that the head on the far right was that of Edward Scissorhands and Pirates of the Caribbean actor Johnny Depp. See Depp’s fake severed head below…

After mentioning that his own head was the one that the group ultimately chooses to present to the Saviors, Nicotero said, “One of the other heads, I don’t know if I’m going to get in trouble if I say this, was Johnny Depp. I think we had sculpted an emaciated version of a dummy head for something and we used Johnny Depp’s head as a basis just for a clay sculpt. I can’t remember who the third one is, but I’m in good company. Norman [Reedus] kept saying he wanted the heads when we were done shooting. I said we’ve got to wait until the picture is logged.”

Next week’s episode of The Walking Dead is entitled ‘The Same Boat’, and a preview of it is available right here.

The Walking Dead airs on AMC on Sunday nights in the States and on Fox on Monday nights in the UK.
