Channelling J.J. Abrams and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the cast and crew of Amazon MGM Studios’ Spaceballs sequel have assembled for an official ‘table read’ photo to mark the start of production on the follow-up to Mel Brooks’ classic 1987 space opera spoof.
Seemingly dropping the Spaceballs 2: The Schwartz Awakens title that was mooted back in June when the project was first announced, the official press release states that “while the title and plot details are being kept under wraps, the title is rumored to be the name of the movie, and plot details are being described as information about what happens in the story.”
The press release does confirm that previously announced returning cast members Rick Moranis (Dark Helmet), Bill Pullman (Lone Starr), Daphne Zuniga (Princess Vespa) and Brooks (President Skroob/Yogurt) will also be joined by George Wyner as Colonel Sandurz, while new cast additions include co-writer Josh Gad (Frozen), Keke Palmer (Nope), Anthony Carrigan (Superman) and Lewis Pullman (Thunderbolts*), the latter of whom is playing Starburst, the son of Lone Starr and Vespa.
Spaceballs 2 is being directed by Josh Greenbaum (Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar) from a script by Gad and co-writers Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem). It is set for a theatrical release in 2027.
