Colin Farrell teases “deeper, scarier” tone for The Batman Part II

September 30, 2025 by Ricky Church

While we await further news on the much anticipated The Batman Part II, Colin Farrell has teased his involvement with the sequel and its “deeper, scarier” script by director Matt Reeves and co-writer Mattson Tomlin.

Farrell starred in The Batman as Oz Cobb/The Penguin, one of Gotham City’s leading criminal figures and a capo in Carmine Falcone’s mafia. He reprised the role in the HBO series The Penguin, set after the film’s conclusion where Penguin stakes his claim to Gotham’s power vacuum in its criminal underworld, doing whatever he can to manipulate and backstab his way to the top.

The series won several awards for its performances, writing and direction, most notably a Golden Globe for Best Performance by a Male Actor for Farrell and recently an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress for Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone, Carmine’s daughter who is also vying for control of Gotham’s underworld.

While a potential second season of The Penguin has not been announced, fans of Farrell’s Oz Cobb will see him again in The Batman Part II, though in a reduced role as Farrell confirmed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “I’ve got an even smaller role in this one. But I’m okay with that,” he said. He went on to tease the sequel’s darker tone. “I’ve read the script, from start to finish, and I can’t say much about it. But it’s deeper, scarier, the stakes are bigger. I’m really excited to see it.”

The Batman Part II has been in development ever since the release of The Batman in 2022, but has been subject to several lengthy delays. Production is scheduled to begin next year for a release date of October 1st, 2027.
