Comic Book Review – Dick Tracy Halloween Special

October 31, 2025 by Andrew Newton

Andrew Newton reviews the Dick Tracy Halloween Special…

Mad Cave’s Dick Tracy Halloween Special brings some ghoulish charm to the classic detective’s world, mixing pulp crime with playful scares into a nice seasonal package. It’s an issue that has a bit of fun with the Halloween theme, but doesn’t sacrifice the sharp storytelling and clever twists that Dick Tracy stories normally entail.

What better way to kick off the main story in the Halloween Special than with a zombie Dick Tracy dishing out punishment to a man about to hit a child? It’s a great opening, and one that immediately raises questions: what has happened to Tracy, or is there something else at play?

As the story unfolds, the truth becomes tangled with a murder mystery takes centre stage, and a number of the detective’s most notorious rogues seem to be on the loose, or at least, people who look like them. Tracy, Tess, and a youngster are soon knee-deep in a case that’s more about identity and illusion than the supernatural, but it keeps that Halloween tension bubbling throughout.

The second story, a Halloween treat for long-time fans of Tess, puts her in the spotlight. A small mistake on her part leads her into the path of a shadowy gang and danger. It’s a shorter tale, but a satisfying one, plus it’s an easy read with a hint of spooky fun that suits the special perfectly. It also nicely balances the mood of the main tale, ending the issue on a warm, slightly mischievous note.

On the art front, the Dick Tracy Halloween Special looks fantastic. The art is crisp and clear, with clean lines and colouring that is bright and bold without being gaudy. This use of colouring provides each panel with a life of its own. There has been a lot of care in the detailing as well, with backgrounds and expressions inviting readers just a little longer on each page.

With its mix of classic detective work, playful mystery, and vibrant art, Dick Tracy Halloween Special is a perfect autumnal read, it’s nostalgic, entertaining, and full of character. And as a bonus, the issue closes with a teaser for Circus Maximus, Mad Cave’s upcoming title.

Rating – Deserves 9/10 treats and no tricks!
