Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions are booting up their next videogame adaptation in the form of co-op shoot-em-up Helldivers, and have tasked Fast & Furious helmer Justin Lin with bringing the critically-acclaimed title to life.
According to THR Lin pitched his idea for Helldivers by emphasising the fact he is a non-gamer, and will instead focus on characters and storytelling. He will work from a script by Gary Dauberman (Annabelle), who recently directed another videogame adaptation, Until Dawn, for Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions.
Set in a dystopian future, players take control of elite soldiers, known as Helldivers, who must defend Super Earth from numerous alien threats, such as Bugs, the Automatons, and the Illuminate.
Released to stellar reviews in 2015, the game has spawned a sequel that shifted 12 million units in its first four months on sale. Praised for its sense of fun, laugh out loud humour, and its satirical approach to the material, there should be plenty in this sandbox for Lin and Dauberman to mine.
