Cillian Murphy-led 28 Years Later 3 given the green light at Sony

December 11, 2025 by Matt Rodgers

Sony Pictures is officially moving forward with the third installment of their 28 Years Later trilogy, with Cillian Murphy set to return and Alex Garland currently writing the script.

The future of the untitled trilogy-capper was always dependant on how Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later and Nia DaCosta’s forthcoming sequel The Bone Temple performed at the box-office. The former opened to critical acclaim in June, and managed to back that up with $150 million at the worldwide box-office, while reactions to early screenings of DaCosta’s sequel, which was filmed back-to-back with 28 Years Later, have been overwhelmingly positive, so-much-so that just one day later Deadline has reported that a second sequel is sprinting into production.

Oppenheimer Oscar-winner Cillian Murphy, who found fame as zombie outbreak survivor Jim in the 2002 original, and exec-produced both 28 Years Later and The Bone Temple, is in talks to return as the lead, while Danny Boyle has spoken numerous times about his desire to direct a potential third installment.

Set for release on January 14 next year, The Bone Temple picks up where 28 Years Later‘s divisive ending left off, with the narrative focus shifting from Spike’s story to that of Jack O’Connell’s tracksuit wearing cult-leader Jimmy Crystal, and his confrontation with Dr. Kelson, played magnificently by Ralph Fiennes.

“Expanding upon the world created by Danny Boyle and Alex Garland in 28 Years Later – but turning that world on its head – Nia DaCosta directs 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. In a continuation of the epic story, Dr. Kelson (Ralph Fiennes) finds himself in a shocking new relationship – with consequences that could change the world as they know it – and Spike’s (Alfie Williams) encounter with Jimmy Crystal (Jack O’Connell) becomes a nightmare he can’t escape. In the world of The Bone Temple, the infected are no longer the greatest threat to survival – the inhumanity of the survivors can be stranger and more terrifying.”

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is in cinemas January 14th.
