There’s trouble for the War Doctor in new Doctor Who adventure The War Doctor Rises: Cybergene

December 11, 2025 by Andrew Newton

In a brand-new full-cast audio drama available from Big Finish today, the War Doctor battles every Cyberman ever in an epic confrontation, in The War Doctor Rises: Cybergene. As the Time War wears on, the Time Lords and the Daleks continue their universe-changing war, but now a new threat is getting involved. A new promo video can be seen below….

The war between the Time Lords and the Daleks rages on in this latest audio adventure, and when the War Doctor’s fight against the enemies of Gallifrey takes him to a war-torn world, he finds that the injured soldiers are being kept alive by technological augmentation. During the war between Gallifrey and Skaro so far, there has been no trace of the Cybermen in the whole universe, until now.

Soldiers, severely injured and dead, are being kept alive by methods that the Doctor is all too familiar with, and so begins a horrifying evolution of the Cybermen threat. The Doctor, along with the battle-hardened surgeon Nesta, will travel multiple worlds, venture into a long-dead Cyber-tomb, and battle every Cybermen variant ever seen on TV.

L to R: Glen McCready, Jonathon Carley, Mitra Djalili, Tracy Wiles, Nicholas Briggs

The War Doctor is played by Jonathan Carley, with Nesta played by Mitra Djalili. Joining them are Nicholas Briggs as the Cybermen, Wayne Forester as Jellik/Cardew, Harriet Kershaw as Tyrus, Shogo Miyakita as Orgreave, Nicholas Khan as Davius, Rachel Atkins as Vargeth, Clive Hayward as Vokol, Glen McCready as Captain Rorval, and Tracy Wiles as Ensign Zolan.

Doctor Who: The War Doctor Rises – Cybergene, written by Jonathan Morris, is available now for £19.99 for the download only, and £24.99 for the download and limited collector’s edition CD.
