“I am large, I contain multitudes,” as Walt Whitman once wrote. I’m not just a movies guy: I enjoy baseball and American football too, and I’ve been a fan of the Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles, respectively, since I was a kid in the 70s.
Yes, I’ve had a blast during both teams’ successful seasons in recent years, and, of course, the Eagles’ pair of Super Bowl wins has been a high point. So when I had a chance to get a Blu-ray copy of this documentary for a review, how could I say no?
I’ve also been a fan of NFL Films’ great documentaries just about as long as I’ve followed the Eagles, and they put together a solid recap of the 2024 season, which culminated in the team’s blowout 40-22 win over the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl. Yeah, I’m just as bored as the next football fan when the Super Bowl is a lopsided game, unless, of course, my team is on the winning side. Heh.
As you’d expect, Super Bowl Champions: The 2024 Philadelphia Eagles takes a game-by-game approach to a season that started unevenly but ended on a high note, despite the absence of starting quarterback Jalen Hurts during the last few games. Along the way, narrator Leslie Odom, Jr. takes us through flashbacks to pivotal moments in the team’s recent history, including drafting Hurts, hiring head coach Nick Sirianni, and bringing in key free agent Saquon Barkley in early 2024.
Of course, each of the three playoff games the team played, which featured the return of Hurts, and the Super Bowl get the most time devoted to them. It was a fun ride to experience as a fan, and I enjoyed the recaps of those contests featured here. As always, NFL Films did a great job of amping up the intensity of those recaps, leaning heavily into “the thrill of victory, the agony of defeat” in both the music and the visuals.
I think one of the reasons I’ve always liked NFL Films’ output is the fact that I see football as similar to Norse mythology, while baseball has always been more like a stage play, with its many personal moments. Football is like two armies going to war, with each side needing to work together to execute their strategis, while baseball teams’ hopes can live and die on a single moment between the pitcher and the batter. That contrast is why I like both sports.
The extras on this Blu-ray disc consist of a trailer and more in-depth recaps of regular season games against the New Orleans Saints, Jacksonville Jaguars, Washington Commanders, and Baltimore Ravens. They run just under 37 minutes total and, yes, the game against the Jaguars featured Barkley’s backwards hurdle over a defender, which also gets a spotlight in the main documentary. Go Birds!
