Disney’s live-action Robin Hood movie no longer happening

March 7, 2026 by Matt Rodgers

“Oo-De-Lally, Oo-De-Lally, Golly what a Day!” Whether that’s a positive or negative depends on how you react to the news that Disney are no longer moving forward with a live-action version of their 1973 animated classic Robin Hood.

Originally announced way back in 2020, Robin Hood was set to be directed by Blindspotting and Raya and the Last Dragon director Carlos López Estrada, bringing to life the animals of Sherwood Forest in a musical that was a blend of CGI and live-action. Written by live-action Lady and the Tramp scribe Kari Granlund, the film was being developed for release on Disney+.

However, Disney has shot an arrow through the heart of those plans, with Estrada revealing during a Reddit AMA this week that Robin Hood is no longer happening.

“Its dead sadly,” Estrada replied. “I say sadly because I actually thought there was something really special (and original!) there. Some truly extraordinary music we had figured out for it.” He added “I keep [daydreaming] about doing it independently with different characters.”

The 1973 Robin Hood was directed by The Sword in the Stone and The Jungle Book‘s Wolfgang Reitherman, and portrayed the characters from the classic story as woodland animals. The titular hero was a fox, Little John was a bear, the sheriff of Nottingham as a wolf, and Maid Marian was a vixen.
