Pixar reveal Monsters Inc. 3 in early development and Coco 2 is coming in 2029

March 7, 2026 by Matt Rodgers

As Pixar prepares to celebrate its biggest opening for an original animated film since 2017 with this weekend’s Hoppers (read our ★★★★ here), news emerges from their California headquarters of the studios future plans, including early development on a further outing for Mike Wazowski and Sulley Sullivan in Monsters Inc. 3.

Pixar’s mission statement was revealed in a Wall Street Journal deep-dive with Pixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter (Up, Soul, Inside Out), who admitted to struggling being able to create wide-appealing movies since John Lasseter departed the prolific animation studio.

This might be why there was confirmation that The Incredibles 3 would be released in 2028, work had started on a Monsters Inc. 3, and the surprise news that a sequel to 2017’s Coco would be released as early as 2029.

It wasn’t all sequels though, with the title of the WSJ piece being ‘Pixar Needs Its Next Hit Franchise’, Docter was keen to announce that Turning Red filmmaker Domee Shi was working on the studio’s first out-and-out musical animation, and that would-be streaming series Ono Ghost Market is being turned into a feature film.

Before that we have yet another Pixar sequel to look forward to with Toy Story 5, which reunites Woody and Buzz later this summer.
