Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptation of Tangled has filled the role for its fan-favourite villain. Agatha All Along and The Studio‘s Kathryn Hahn will play Mother Gothel, the witch who kidnaps Rapunzel and uses her magical hair to stay young.
Hahn announced her participation in the film on her Instagram account, playfully showing off her Mother Gothel t-shirt. Hahn has been rumoured for the role for several weeks after Scarlett Johannson was initially set to play Gothel but had to back out due to her scheduling commitments to Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II and Mike Flanagan’s The Exorcist.
Hahn will star alongside Teagan Croft (Titans) as Rapunzel and Milo Manheim (Thanksgiving) as Flynn Rider with Michael Gracey (The Greatest Showman) directing from a script by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge).

The original 2010 animated film adapted the classic Rapunzel fairytale with music composed by Disney legend Alan Menken. The film followed Rapunzel after she was kidnapped as a baby and raised by Mother Gothel in a hidden tower where Rapunzel’s magic hair kept Gothel young. After meeting the mischievous thief Flynn Rider, she forces him to take her to the kingdom to see the floating lights that come in the sky on her birthday, leading her to uncover her secret past and take her life in her own hands.
