Batman v Superman pre-sales outpacing Deadpool and The Avengers, set for massive opening weekend

March 15, 2016 by Scott J. Davis

As we creep closer and closer to the release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice next week, Deadline is reporting that the film looks set for a huge US opening.

Various sources have the Warner Bros./DC Comics film outpacing many of the most recent comic book movies, including this year’s Deadpool, which opened to $132.4 million, and The Avengers, which holds the third-highest opening weekend of all time with $207.4 million. It could also beat Furious 7 ($147.1 million) which opened in a similar pre-summer spot in April last year. Early tracking suggests the film’s pre-sales are between $20-$25 million, a similar total to that of The Dark Knight Rises, which opened to $160.9 million in 2012.

Movio Co-Founder and Chief Executive Will Palmer told Deadline: “As expected, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is anticipated by the fan male audience….The audience profile is 78% male, massively over indexing between age 14-49. This is your avid opening weekend audience with some 70% attending films during opening week, spending 3.2 times more than the typical US moviegoer.”

Fearing the actions of a god-like Super Hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.
