The Housemaid’s Secret to go head-to-head with Marvel’s Avengers: Secret Wars

March 31, 2026 by Gary Collinson

Coinciding with today’s home entertainment release of The Housemaid, a teaser poster has arrived line for the freshly-announced The Housemaid’s Secret, which reveals a December 17th 2027 release date for the Sydney Sweeney-led sequel, as Lionsgate brings out the big guns to counterprogram Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Secret Wars by going head-to-head with the superhero blockbuster.

Directed by Paul Feig and based on the novel by Freida McFadden, The Housemaid sees Sydney Sweeney as a young woman with a troubled past, who is hired to work as a live-in maid for a family with dark secrets. The film, which also stars Amanda Seyfried, Brandon Sklenar and Michele Morrone, was released at the start of December and proved to be a box office smash, grossing $397.5 million worldwide from a production budget of just $35 million.

The Housemaid’s Secret will be based on the second novel in McFadden’s bestselling book series, and sees Feig back in the director’s chair alongside Sweeney, returning co-star Michele Morrone, and new cast addition Kirsten Dunst.

While it would seem a gamble for Lionsgate to pit the film against Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday follow-up, production on the superhero sequel isn’t scheduled to begin production until the middle of this year, and given the multiple delays to Doomsday, it remains to be seen whether Secret Wars will hold its December 2027 date.

The Housemaid’s Secret is set for release on December 17th 2027.
