007 First Light developer diary delves into the story of the upcoming James Bond game

April 11, 2026 by Andrew Newton

The third episode of Beyond the Light, IO Interactive’s developer diary providing a behind-the-scenes look at their upcoming James Bond origin game, 007 First Light, is available to watch below. This latest episode looks into the team’s approach to creating the story and reimagining the origin of the iconic British hero for video games. You can watch this new episode below…

Episode 3 of the developer diary series introduces audiences to Main Writer Michael Vogt, as he shares how the game’s story is created. From this, we get to learn about classic screenwriting fundamentals such as structure, character arcs, and themes, and then how these form the outline for the level design and interactive experience.

Vogt also explains how our younger hero provides a different tone to the game’s world than he would when he is older. We are all used to seeing a strong, confident and resourceful Bond, one who has had ample experience and knows what to expect from his opponents. However, this young Bond is idealistic, adventurous and eager to prove himself as he steps into the world of espionage for the first time.

This upcoming original Bond adventure will allow players to use stealth, direct action, or a combination of the two to complete missions their own way. By using Spycraft, Instinct, Gadgets, and Combat, players can approach each mission in a way that they feel comfortable with. Spycraft will involve stealthy movements, information gathering and infiltration. Instinct uses Bond’s ability to adapt, bluff and deceive opponents. Gadgets will come from Q Branch, giving players more tactical flexibility throughout missions. Finally, Combat covers gunplay, melee combat, and interactions with the environment.

007 First Light will launch on 27th May and is available to pre-order now on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 (this is only for physical editions), and PC. Those who pre-order will be upgraded to the Deluxe Edition for free, providing 24-hour Early Access, exclusive in-game items and outfits.
