Following the recent release of the trailer for Shrek 5, Universal Pictures has announced that the long-mooted Donkey spin-off movie will hit cinemas on June 30, 2028.
Per The Hollywood Reporter Eddie Murphy will return to the role he first played in 2001’s $480 million grossing smash hit animated fairy-tale to tell Donkey’s origin story. Donkey will be co-directed by Charlie Bean (The Lego Ninjago Movie and Disney’s live-action Lady and the Tramp) and Matt Flynn (The Bad Guys).

This won’t be the first Far, Far Away solo spin-off outing, with the Antonio Banderas-led Puss in Boots (2011) and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022) grossing over a billion dollars combined. Add this to the $2.9 billion that the four main Shrek films have collectively grossed, and it seems a no-brainer for Dreamworks Animation to expand this world.
Based on William Steig’s 1990 picture-book, Shrek tells the tale of the titular swamp-dwelling ogre (Mike Myers), his trusted sidekick Donkey (Eddie Murphy), and ‘True Love’ Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz). 2027’s eagerly-anticipated fifth outing will introduce Zendaya (Spider-Man: Brand New Day) as Shrek and Fiona’s daughter, Felicia.
