Another week, another internet IP secured by a major studio in the hope of having the new Backroom on their hands. This time it’s Trevor Henderson’s Cartoon Cat that has been snaffled up by Sony’s TriStar Pictures for a big screen adaptation.
Following Warner Bros. pricey acquisition of Henderson’s Siren Head, which is set to be writen by Zach Cregger (Weapons) and directed by Brian Duffield (Whalefall), Deadline confirm that TriStar Pictures are actively looking for a filmmaker to bring Cartoon Cat to life.
Created by the Canadian creature designer, Cartoon Cat is described as a malevolent internet cryptid who takes the form of a terrifying animated feline. It haunts abandoned buildings and uses it nostalgic 1930s cartoon appearance to lure unsuspecting victims and wreak havoc.
Following the $50 million gross of Markiplier’s Iron Lung, and the $365 million-and-counting haul for Kane Parson’s Backrooms, you can expect Cartoon Cat to be fast-tracked to cinema screens.
