Jennifer’s Body writer Diablo Cody has long talked about a sequel to the cult favourite and now she has made new comments teasing that Jennifer’s Body 2 is imminent and what audiences might expect for the beloved villainess.

Jennifer’s Body was released in 2009 and featured Megan Fox as Jennifer Check, a popular high school girl who becomes possessed by a demon in a Satanic ritual gone wrong. As her victims mount, her best friend Needy, played by Amanda Seyfried, has to find a way to stop Jennifer’s murderous rampage and either release her from her possession or kill her.
While the film failed at the box office it has maintained a cult status and been re-evaluated by modern audiences as a feminist film rather than the sex driven appeal of Fox’s character that 20th Century Fox heavily utilized in the film’s initial marketing. Speaking on the Petticoat Revolution podcast, Cody teased the sequel will explore more of Jennifer’s character and why fans should feel sympathy for her despite her demonic influence.
“Jennifer is a sympathetic character for me, before and after the transformation. I mean, she is very isolated, she’s very lonely, she’s very insecure. Everybody remembers Jennifer when she’s like, ‘I am a god,’ or when she’s at her most radiant and at her most powerful. But people forget about these moments in the movie where she’s like a shell of herself, she’s just exsanguinated almost. And to me, Megan played both of those sides of Jennifer so well.”

“And one fun thing—I can’t talk about it too much—but you know we’re doing a sequel to this movie, like imminently, and I felt like in the new movie, I was able to explore even more about why Jennifer is sympathetic and what she’s been through. And there is absolutely, to me, a loneliness and a poignancy to that character that people don’t always recognize,” she concluded.
There is no official word whether Fox or Seyfried will reprise their roles, but both actresses have previously been enthusiastic about returning for more if a sequel gets greenlit. Nor is their any word if director Karyn Kusama would come back to direct or if Cody will helm the project herself, but with her teasing a sequel is imminent perhaps we will not have to wait long to hear if Jennifer’s Body 2 becomes a reality.
