Simon Kinberg says Wolverine 3 “takes place in the future”

April 13, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Originally published April 13, 2016. Updated April 13, 2018.

With Hugh Jackman set to do the claws one final time for next year’s Wolverine 3, there’s been a lot of speculation – perhaps even bordering on expectation – that the film will adapt Mark Millar and Steve McNiven’s acclaimed Old Man Logan comic book storyline.

As yet, there’s been no official word from anyone involved with the project to confirm whether Old Man Logan will serve as an inspiration for the film or not, but producer Simon Kinberg may have dropped a big hint this week, telling CinemaBlend that “the movie takes place in the future.”

Now, before we all get too excited, it should be noted that Kinberg could be referring to the “future timeline” of the X-Men franchise as opposed to the First Class timeline, which we already knew given the inclusion of Patrick Stewart’s Professor Xavier. Still, given the hints from Jackman and Stewart over the past few months, it would be a surprise at this point if the film doesn’t include at least some elements of Old Man Logan.

Wolverine 3 is set for release on March 3rd, 2017, with James Mangold (The Wolverine) directing and Boyd Holbrook (Narcos) set to play the main villain, “a relentless, calculating and intense head of security for a global enterprise who is set against Jackman’s clawed Wolverine/Logan hero.”
