Mark Millar and Stuart Immonen’s Empress heading to the big screen

May 4, 2016 by James Garcia

Another week, another Mark Millar comic heading to the big screen. According to THR, the latest of Millar’s books headed to the silver screen is Empress, which just hit comic book store shelves in April.

Empress, which Millar co-created with artist Stuart Immonen, centers on the wife of a galactic dictator who decides to leave her evil husband and take her three children – ages 15, 10, and 18 months – with her to her home world. Needless to say, he isn’t happy about the idea, and sends his armies after her. The comic includes dinosaurs fighting in gladiator arenas and lots of cool sci-fi stuff, so it could lead to a pretty fun film adaptation.

The story is only the latest in a string of Millar-created projects that are in various stages of development. Just last week, Waypoint Entertainment bought the rights for Supercrooks and American Jesus, while titles like Huck, Chrononauts, and Starlight are underway at studios like Fox and Universal. Then of course there’s Kingsman: The Golden Circle, which is filming now and slated to arrive next year.

Empress is moving forward under producers Joe Roth (Maleficent, Alice Through the Looking Glass) and Jeff Kirschenbaum (Wanted), from a script by xXx: The Return of Xander Cage scribe F. Scott Frazier.

We will of course keep you apprised of more news as it develops. In the meantime, let us know what you think of this new adaptation in the comments below.
