Comic Book Review – Street Fighter X G.I. Joe #4

May 25, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Gary Collinson reviews Street Fighter X G.I. Joe #4…

The World Warrior Tournament enters the finals, and M. Bison will stop at nothing to be the last one standing! Can the Street Fighters and G.I. JOE stop the Shadaloo dictator before he takes the top spot?

Here we are with the penultimate issue of IDW’s big crossover between Street Fighter and G.I. Joe, as Rufus battles Jinx and M. Bison takes on Guile for a place in the final of the M.A.R.S. Industries-sponsored World Warrior Tournament.

Previous chapters have stuck rigidly to a four-fight structure, which left the bouts feeling a little rushed, and the series itself little repetitive. In that regard, it makes a refreshing change that we get to see a more space devoted to both of the semi-final bouts here, and there’s also a nice mix of tone, with Rufus vs. Jinx presented in a more humourous and light-hearted way than the all-business brawl between Bison and Guile.

In my review of the previous issue, I’d said that I hoped the switch to a two-fight format would mean we also get more insight into the wider story, but sadly that’s not the case. I’m starting to feel like a broken record with my criticism but we’re four issues in now and I genuinely don’t have a clue what’s going on behind-the-scenes of the tournament. There have however been plenty of little teases towards the bigger picture throughout the series, so of course the payoff could well be worth it come the final issue. I’m hoping for plenty of twists and turns as the various characters and factions show their hands.

If you’ve been enjoying Street Fighter X G.I. Joe so far, then you’re not going to be disappointed with issue #4. And if you haven’t been enjoying it (but you’ve stuck with it), then I’m afraid this issue probably isn’t going to do much to alter your opinion.

Rating: 6/10
