From Titan Comics comes a series of comic stories that serve as prequels to the Heroes Reborn television show on NBC. They plan on coming out with several five issue character studies. The first of which was Heroes: Vengeance (check out my reviews of #1,#2,#3,#4, #5) and focused on El Vengador. The second is called Heroes: Godsend and is about Farah Nazan.
Issue #1 introduced Farah Nazan and showed how she discovered her powers. Issue #2 shows us how she gets introduced to Angela Petrelli and is assigned her mission to protect Malina. The main storyline of issue #3 is Farah breaking Daniel Linderman out of prison so he can heal Malina.
This issue has Farah investigating why so many buildings on her street in Queens are getting bought up, especially when many of the families would not willingly sell, so the increased violence and hate crimes must be a part of it, but why?
We take a little trip down memory lane to her days spent training with her uncle Omar who teaches her a lesson about praying and why they do it (not because the bible says to, but to give thanks and seek guidance). Cut back to modern day and Farah is praying and seeking answers to the land grab going on around her apartment building. Unbeknownst to her, a woman who lost her high-powered CEO husband in the 911 attacks is carrying on the company matters and trying to build her empire up. She plans to redevelop the Astoria area using tax credits from the city and all the land that she has acquired through unscrupulous means. She is visited by a gentleman who tells her if they don’t get all the property soon, the tax credits will expire.
Meanwhile, Farah has figured out that this woman’s company is the one buying up all the land in the area and she begins to investigate them. Her friend Jamal has a startling reveal for her when he learns that they need to find out more. He takes her in a back alley and shows her that he’s actually a EVO who can run really fast. They stake out the company and know they are onto something when the giant bald man that visited the prison she broke Linderman out of and had another prisoner released was walking out of the building. Farah and Jamal try to fight him, but he’s too big and fast and knocks Farah out before escaping with Jamal doped up in the trunk of his car. Farah tries to run after him, but to no avail. What will she do now?
The end of the comic sets up the final issue nicely. Who is the giant bald man? What is Mrs. Haas really up to? Will Farah be able to save her neighborhood from these thugs? Hopefully all will be revealed in the conclusion of this five issue series.
In terms of bonus material, there was a nice little breakdown of how the artist designs the cover from sketch to finished product and all the steps in between. There also was a tease for the next and final issue of the Godsend series, showing both the main cover and the variant cover. In terms of scoring #4, I had the exact reverse problem for this month’s issue. Last month I liked the drawings and thought there was not enough plot. This month I really disliked the drawings, but thought there was a ton of plot and it really moved the story along at a good pace. Frankly, with only one issue left to get Farah to where she starts in the Heroes: Reborn event series, they need to cover a lot of ground. For this reason, I give issue #4 a score of 8 out of 10.
Issue #4 hits newsstands on June 15th.
