Dean Devlin on why they’re rebooting Stargate

June 20, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Director Roland Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin may have finally got their Independence Day sequel off the ground, with Independence Day: Resurgence set to open next week, but the duo have opted to go down a different route with Stargate, choosing instead to reboot the 1994 sci-fi with what they hope to be a brand new trilogy.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Devlin has revealed that the original plan was always to produce a trilogy, but given that MGM followed the movie with three companion TV shows, they feel the only way now to move forward is by starting from scratch.

“[Because of] what happened with the rights and changes at the studio, we never got to do parts two and three,” states Devlin. “It’s not a story that can take place 20 years later. So the only way to really tell that trilogy is to go back from the beginning and start the story all over again. It was taken away from us, and it’s tough to have your children raised by other parents, even if they do a very good job. … For us, it’s not putting down what has been done. It’s to let us finish telling our story.”

Are you excited about the prospect of a new Stargate trilogy, and is a reboot the right way to go? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…
