Rumour: Lucasfilm planning potential Han Solo trilogy

July 26, 2016 by Ricky Church

It seems everyone’s favourite stuck up, half-witted, scruffy-looking Nerfherder is set to get his own Star Wars trilogy. After the reveal at Star Wars Celebration that Alden Ehrenreich will play a young Han Solo in the next anthology film, the New York Daily News is now reporting Lucasfilm hopes to expand his role with a three-picture deal. A source said:

“There is a real sense of excitement around the Han Solo movie and its potential. Given that Han’s early adventures do not need to be tied to the Empire, it leaves story lines open with the opportunity to really give fans something different. They can explore new galaxies and crazy creatures and bring in a wide array of new characters.”

It wouldn’t exactly be surprising if this turned out to be true. After all, Han Solo is one of the most memorable and favourite characters in the Star Wars franchise so it would make sense for the studio to continue using the character in some way on film. However, this apparently hinges on the box office success of the first film and whether or not audiences will accept anyone but Harrison Ford as Solo. Until we hear otherwise from Disney/Lucasfilm, take this with a grain of salt.

The as yet untitled Han Solo film will be directed by Christopher Miller and Phil Lord with a script by The Empire Strikes Back writer Lawrence Kasdan and his son Jon Kasdan. It is currently set for a May 25, 2018 release date.
