Netflix explains why it passed on Agent Carter

July 28, 2016 by admin

It was sad news to fans of the show when ABC decided not to renew Marvel’s Agent Carter for a third season, which prompted a campaign for the series to head over to Netflix and join Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist. However it seems as though the steaming service have passed on the option to pick it up with chief content officer Ted Sarandos explaining a need for original content as their reason why.

“We’re looking for truly original brands to own,” he told Entertainment Weekly, “and in that Marvel space we already have [original comic book shows] – so that was mostly why.”

However, that wasn’t the only reason.

“They also have some output deal complexities,” he added. “So when you pick it up, being able to pick it up globally is difficult even after it’s canceled. Some of those output partners still had it on the air, so they would argue its covered by their output [deals]. Unfortunately, it was a business decision more than a creative one.”

With Netflix currently gearing up for the first seasons of Luke Cage and Iron Fist, as well as a second season of Jessica Jones and a third season of Daredevil (not to mention The Punisher spin-off show), the service likely has their hands full with comic book heroes for the time being. Though the revelation of ‘output’ deals could also dispel certain fan wishes for Ghost Rider – who has just been confirmed for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. – getting his own series on Netflix.

Is this the last of Agent Carter? It certainly looks like it for now.
