Vin Diesel says James Gunn is interested in a Rocket/Groot solo movie

December 6, 2016 by James Garcia

The debut of a new teaser trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has put Marvel’s lovable band of intergalactic misfits back in the spotlight, and excitement for their return to cinemas is at an all-time high. That means that actors on press tours for their other projects will soon be facing a slew of new Guardians-related inquiries. The first example of this comes to us from Vin Diesel, the voice of Groot, and his latest interview with Screen Junkies.

While promoting xXx: The Return of Xander Cage, Diesel was asked about the future of the Guardians of the Galaxy, who are confirmed to appear in Avengers: Infinity War but whose future beyond that remains a mystery. When asked if Groot could team up with other Marvel characters like Spider-Man in the future, Diesel suggested instead that GOTG director James Gunn is actually interested in a Rocket/Groot spinoff movie:

“I think if it’s up to James Gunn, you’re going to see a Groot/Rocket movie.”

Now, this comment is a far cry from an official confirmation that such a film is happening, but the gun-loving Raccoon and sentient tree are two of the franchise’s most popular characters, and Gunn himself seems to have been given a bit more autonomy with his Marvel projects than past directors. If Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is a smash hit, who’s to say that spinoff films for any of the characters, including Rocket and Groot, couldn’t happen?

Tell us, would you be interested in a spinoff film focusing on the lovable duo? Or would you rather see them stay teamed up with the likes of Star-Lord, Gamora and Drax? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is scheduled for release on April 28th 2017 in the UK and on May 5th in the States, with director James Gunn reuniting with returning cast members Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Dave Bautista (Drax), Bradley Cooper (Rocket), Vin Diesel (Groot), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Michael Rooker (Yondu), Glenn Close (Nova Prime) and Sean Gunn (Kraglin) alongside new additions Pom Klementieff (Oldboy) as Mantis, Elizabeth Debicki (The Man from U.N.C.L.E.) as Ayesha, Kurt Russell (The Hateful Eight) as Ego the Living Planet, Chris Sullivan (The Drop) as Taserface and Sylvester Stallone (Creed) in as yet-unrevealed role.
