Sakaar to feature in Thor: Ragnarok, director Taika Waititi reveals

December 20, 2016 by Gary Collinson

We’ve known for a while now that next year’s Thor: Ragnarok will incorporate elements of the Planet Hulk storyline, with Chris Hemsworth’s God of Thunder and Mark Ruffalo’s Green Goliath finding themselves doing battle in the Grandmaster’s arenas.

Back in October it was rumoured that the ‘Ragnarok’ of the movie’s title would actually refer to the planet where these arenas are situated; however, director Taika Waititi has now seemingly debunked that, revealing that the film will take place on Sakaar, the planet from the original Planet Hulk storyline.

“Sakaar was just an insane, far-off, furutistic place which was the biggest shift for the film and these characters,” Waititi told Total Film, before revealing that legendary artist Jack Kirby has been an inspiration for the look of the Phase Three movie: “I was really excited when Kevin Feige and the rest of Marvel jumped on board with the idea to use Kirby as a big influence in the design of the film. What’s really hard is staying authentic.”

Thor: Ragnarok is being directed by Taika Waititi (What We Do in the Shadows) and features Marvel veterans Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Idris Elba as Heimdall and Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk alongside Cate Blanchett as Hela, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Jeff Goldblum as the Grandmaster, Karl Urban as Skurge and Sam Neill in an as-yet-unrevealed role. It is set for release on November 3rd, 2017.
