Rumour: Blade Runner 2049 could feature a replicant from the original film via CGI

January 3, 2017 by Ricky Church

A lot of mystery still surrounds the story and production of the long-awaited sequel Blade Runner 2049. Very little is known about the film and how it will connect to Ridley Scott’s original, save the return of Harrison Ford as Detective Rick Deckard. Now, however, The Terminator Fans have posted an intriguing rumour that says a Replicant from the original Blade Runner could be making an appearance via CGI.

Replicants are robots that appear human in very lifelike ways, from their skin to speech patterns, but never physically age. Terminator Fans’ sources say that thanks to the advancement of digital technology to recreate an actor’s younger appearance – such as Arnold Schwarzenegger in Terminator: Salvation and Terminator Genisys or more recently Peter Cushing in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story – director Denis Villeneuve and the production team will be able to recreate one of the original replicants.

The question then becomes which actor will the film recreate? The only options are Rutger Hauer’s Roy Batty, Daryl Hannah’s Pris, Sean Young’s Rachael, or perhaps even Harrison Ford himself as a young Deckard in either a flashback or to confirm a longstanding theory that Deckard himself is a replicant. Villeneuve has previously said Blade Runner 2049 will delve into the mystery surrounding Deckard’s true identity so it is entirely possible CGI will be used to recreate a younger Harrison Ford for the film.

Who do you think will be returning? Will we see Roy Batty again or finally get confirmation on Deckard’s identity?

Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years.

Blade Runner 2049 is set for release on October 6th.
