Scott Derrickson says Marvel is too busy with Phase Three to green light Doctor Strange 2

January 29, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Given that Doctor Strange grossed $659.9 million from its release late last year, it’s inevitable that Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sorcerer Supreme will return for a sequel, although as yet there’s been no official word from Marvel Studios. And, according to director Scott Derrickson, we may have a little wait on our hands before we get the official announcement, as Marvel has its hands full with its other Phase Three projects at the moment.

“I have no idea where it fits in,” Derrickson tells EW. “I’ve sort of been off the grid. I very much needed a break after that. But I’m starting to read TV pilots. I love dramatic television, and I’ve gotten quite a few good offers on really good pilots. I may do a pilot before Doctor Strange 2, if Doctor Strange 2 is going to happen. Right now, I don’t think the people at Marvel are calling anybody for anything. They’re making way too many movies at once right now [to do that]. [Given] how intimately involved they are in the development and shooting and post-production of those movies, they’ve got their hands very full right now.”

Marvel certainly does have a lot of its plate at present; as well as post-production on this year’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Thor: Ragnarok, the studio has just started shooting Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War (which is filming back to back with the as-yet-untitled Avengers 4), and also has Ant-Man and the Wasp due to start production in the summer.
