Mark Gatiss doesn’t know if we’ll see more Sherlock

February 24, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Prior to the premiere of Sherlock series four on New Year’s Day, there was a lot of talk that the latest season could be the final run of episodes for the beloved BBC drama.

Back in October, Benedict Cumberbatch indicated that the fourth series “might be the end of an era”, only for Steven Moffat to downplay his comments and offer a glimmer of hope to fans that we may get further episodes at some point in the future. Well, now co-creator Mark Gatiss has weighed in with his own thoughts, and it doesn’t sound like he’s overly optimistic about a series five:

“I honestly don’t know if there will be any more,” Gatiss tells The Sun. “It’s incredibly difficult to get Benedict and Martin’s diaries to align. And obviously we left it in a very happy place…if that’s the end I’d be very happy where we left it. The last day tends to be an odd day – it’s never quite as you imagine it. But we did actually try and contrive it so the very last shot was Benedict and Martin running out of the building. Then we realised that we had to do one last shot the next day of Martin falling over – so that’s how it ended. As usual these things end with a whimper.”

The latest series didn’t quite manage to reach the same level of acclaim as its predecessors, and also slumped to a ratings low. That being said, there are no doubt many fans who would be delighted if Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman do reunite for future episodes.
