Jared Leto in talks for TRON reboot, TRON: Legacy director discusses original plans for third movie

March 7, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Back in May 2015, Disney announced that it had pulled the plug on its planned follow-up to TRON: Legacy, but it seems the Mouse House may not be finished with the franchise entirely, as THR is reporting that Jared Leto is in early talks for the lead in a reboot of the sci-fi property.

According to the site, the new movie is being built out of the screenplay for the abandoned TRON 3 script, TRON: Ascension, an would see Leto as a character called Ares, named after the Greek God of War. It is said that the project will not be a direct follow-up to TRON: Legacy, although it is possible that Garrett Hedlund’s Sam Flynn and Olivia Wilde’s Quorra could make an appearance. However, it is early days, and as yet there’s no writer or director attached.

Meanwhile, in an interview with Collider, TRON: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski has offered up some details on where Ascension would have taken the storyline, had Disney not applied the brakes:

“I think we got the script to about 80%. We were in good shape. We were probably eight or nine months out, which is still a good amount of distance from being ready to shoot it, but I think the script was in good shape. What I’m excited about is the concept, which is an invasion movie from inside the machine coming out as opposed to one we’ve usually seen. So we hinted at that at the end of Legacy with Quorra coming out, but the idea for Ascension was a movie that was, the first act was in the real world, the second act was in the world of TRON, or multiple worlds of TRON, and the third act was totally in the real world. And I think that really opens up, blows open the concept of TRON in a way that would be thrilling to see on screen. But there’s also a really interesting character study in Quorra and a ‘Stranger in a Strange Land,’ trying to figure out where she belongs having lived in the real world for a few years, and where does she fit in.”

Are you excited about the prospect of a return to the world of TRON? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…
