Given that we’re still a couple of months away from release and tickets aren’t even on sale, it seems a little early – and a little speculative – to be predicting the opening weekend of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but nevertheless early tracking reports are in, and as you’d expect, it seems Marvel has another solid hit on its hands.
Box Office is reporting that the Guardians sequel is looking at a domestic opening of $160 million, which is on par with the debut weekends for The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, and would place the film in the top ten biggest opening weekends of all time.
For comparison, the first Guardians of the Galaxy opened with $94.3 million back in 2014, while Marvel’s biggest domestic opening weekend’s to date are The Avengers ($207.4 million), Avengers: Age of Ultron ($191.3 million), Captain America: Civil War ($179.1 million), Iron Man 3 ($174.1) and Iron Man 2 ($128.1 million).

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is scheduled for release on April 28th 2017 in the UK and on May 5th in the States, with director James Gunn reuniting with returning cast members Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Dave Bautista (Drax), Bradley Cooper (Rocket), Vin Diesel (Groot), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Michael Rooker (Yondu), Glenn Close (Nova Prime) and Sean Gunn (Kraglin) alongside new additions Pom Klementieff (Oldboy) as Mantis, Elizabeth Debicki (The Man from U.N.C.L.E.) as Ayesha, Kurt Russell (The Hateful Eight) as Ego the Living Planet, Chris Sullivan (The Drop) as Taserface and Sylvester Stallone (Creed) in as-yet-unrevealed role.
