It looks like DuckTales isn’t the only 90s cartoon that’s getting a reboot. IndieWire has learnt that the famous Animaniacs will be returning as Yakko, Wakko and their sister Dot once again escape from the WB water Tower. Steven Spielberg, who helped develop the series in its original run, will reportedly be on board the revival.
The series saw the sibling trio locked away on the WB lot since the 1930s because their films ‘made absolutely no sense’ and they themselves ‘made even less sense’ and were never to be released. Animaniacs was also a bit of an anthology, following several different characters in short segments that became fan favourites and caught on a huge following for its mixture of childish humour with more sophisticated and adult jokes.
Several of the characters became fan-favourites, such as Slappy the Squirrel, the Goodfeathers and Chicken Boo, but none more so than the iconic duo Pinky and the Brain. The laboratory mice, with one determined to conquer the world and the other his dimwitted sidekick, became so popular they garnered their own spin-off Pink and the Brain, even later crossing over with Tiny Tunes for Pinky, Elmyra & the Brain.
Created by Tom Ruegger, Animaniacs ran for a total of 99 episodes and even spawned the feature length movie Wakko‘s Wish as something of a finale. Its voice cast included Rob Paulsen, Tress MacNeille, Jess Harnell, Sherri Stoner and Maurice LaMarche. Animaniacs even went on to win several Daytime Emmys as well as a Peabody Award, cementing its legacy as one of the greatest cartoons ever made.
