Game of Thrones actress reveals her season 5 death was supposed to be much more violent

June 12, 2017 by Jordan Jones

One character in HBO’s Game of Thrones season 5 was supposed to meet a much grislier fate. Myrcella Baratheon, as we know, was poisoned on a ship to King’s Landing and this death ended up being one of the tamer ones on the show. Talking at MCM London, actress Nell Tiger Free explains the shocking death for her character that was left on the cutting-room floor:

“I don’t know if I should say this, but originally what happened is they gave me those mashed up bananas with like blood – fake blood – and my brains were supposed to be all over the ship and stuff. I was so excited. I don’t like gore but, like, I knew they were just like bananas, so I was okay with it.”

Game of Thrones is no stranger to dispatching key characters in the most graphic ways possible, but the show also knows when to pull things back. The actress went on to state that “they wanted Myrcella’s death to reflect her life, and wanted it to be sweet.”

In Game of Thrones, there are no rules. Heroes get a villain’s death, while villains sometimes sleep peacefully. In the fray, innocents like Myrcella Baratheon are lost, but it’s always up to chance how memorable their death ends up being. It’s this uncertainty that makes Game of Thrones such a fantastic show.
